Letter From the Made Woman Mag Staff

Doing Our Part

Letter from our Editor-in-Chief, Serena Watson -- April 21, 2014

"We know only too well that what we do is just a drop in the ocean. But if the drop were not there, the ocean would be missing something" -Mother Teresa.

At the beginning of our 30 Days of Made: Giving Back initiative, we talked about the level of overwhelm one can feel when thinking about the multitude of problems in the world. You want to do something about them, but where to start? We know the feeling all too well, which is why we decided to try out this little experiment. We offered our readers a host of Made Woman-approved charities and non-profits with the purpose of connecting your interest to a great cause.

The hope here isn't just that we raise tons of money -- though that would be awesome. Beyond that, our aim is to inspire our readers to choose organizations that they can join and give back to for the long term. If you are in LA, maybe you will read about the org TreePeople and want plant trees every weekend. If you are a dog lover, maybe you will sign up with today's non-profit, Best Friends Org and find great homes for cute puppies. Whatever cause that makes you feel the most inspired; hone in and get active; because your work -- your help -- is needed.

It may not seem like much: a few dollars, an afternoon spent at a run/walk event, a tweet or two...but the world needs whatever you have inside you to give. It needs your unique and special offering. And if your efforts to give back will brighten your corner of world in even a small way, you've done your part.

Letter From the Made Woman Mag Staff

Let's Do This

Letter from our Editor-in-Chief, Serena Watson -- March 24, 2014

Whew! It’s been a crazy few days! As I write this right now, my eyes are blurry with exhaustion – I haven’t slept a lot in the last few days -- but my heart is full of hope. This week, my business partner flew in from New York so that we could hold a retreat for our writers and have a full day photo shoot for the mag. Sounds like a plan, right? But there was soooo much to do!

Saturday, we held a gathering for our writers so that we could all talk about our successes, our goals and (of course) our love lives. :) The event went well and it was awesome to see everyone, hang out and sip champagne. We got some great feedback and -- as I looked around -- I realized how diverse our team is. The common denominator among us? Talent. From entrepreneurs and social media managers to PR and relationship experts – we had it covered. We all have something awesome to contribute, and Made Woman Mag is our platform. It's the way we get our message out and share our talents across our various industries.

Also, on the agenda for this weekend? A full-day photo shoot yesterday with ten models. It was a challenging undertaking, but also a fun one. We couldn’t have done it without a lot of help (and a lot of beautiful friends – thanks guys!), but we killed it! Between shots, powerful connections were made, because well, Made Women know how to network. The success of the shoot as well as the retreat filled me with hope for what else 2014 has to bring.  While sleep is nice, I wouldn’t trade the last few days for anything. The shared vision for our network came to life and reaffirmed why we are doing this. To help others reach their goals, create positive representations of women and to do it with style!

Talent

Letter from our Editor-in-Chief, Serena Watson -- February 24, 2014

We are all born with gifts. We have innate talents that flourish over time -- and with practice. Any Olympian will tell you that they didn’t start out as a great athlete; but with training and focus, they made it to the big leagues. Maybe you can sing like a bird or draw like a master. Or maybe it’s something as simple as being a whiz at planning trips or shopping like a pro. Don’t laugh -- I consider these talents, too!

Whatever your gifts are, they shouldn’t be ignored. You should figure out what you do best and put it out there for the world to see, just like the folks that entered our Respect The Classics contest over the past two weeks. Why? Because when you share your gifts with the world, you open yourself up to receive things back. You could end up with a cool prize, a new job or even a record deal.  People love to support and encourage talent! Great talent lives forever, and when you show the world what you can do, they will take notice.

As we showcase all our fabulous Respect The Classics submissions today, we hope that you are inspired by the unique and creative people that shared their talents with us. We’ve posted all of the entries on Facebook and are asking you all to “like” and comment on your favorites. Show these fearless folks some love on our Facebook page and then ask yourself, What’s my talent? Remember: if you embrace your gifts, they will embrace you back!

Respect The Classics Contest

Respect The Classics Contest // February 10, 2014

When a hit song can keep your head nodding years after its release, and remembering all the lyrics is like a badge of honor -- you know you are dealing with a classic. Great music lives forever; and this month we are paying homage to hip hop + R&B with our #RespectTheClassics contest.

Respect the Classics is a campaign with special edition releases from Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), saluting hip-hop’s finest. UMe’s extensive catalogue includes iconic albums from the Def Jam, Interscope, Priority, and Virgin Records vaults. Titles like the 25th Anniversary Editions of Eazy-E’s triple platinum solo debut, Eazy-Duz-It, Ice Cube’s solo debut, AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, and N.W.A’s iconic, triple-platinum Straight Outta Compton, to name a few. UMe is also re-issuing many albums this coming year, including Kanye West’s 808’s and Heartbreaks, 2Pac’s Greatest Hits, and Eminem's Slim Shady LP.

When we heard about what they were doing, we knew we couldn’t pass up the chance to collaborate with them and show our respect too -- because, hey, we love good music. Their fresh and creative campaign is giving new life to the jams we love.  Now, artists and fans alike can join in and potentially become a part of music history.

***Update***

The submissions are in, and we're loving what we're seeing! From drawings, to jam sessions to belly dancing (yes, belly dancing!) -- you've truly shown us that you #RespectTheClassics.
